Hi, my name is Kylie and here are five words you use every day that have racist origins. Number one, hip hip hooray. Although it might sound joyful, hip hip was an anti-semitic chant used by mobs in Europe in the 1900s. Especially during the hip hip riots in Germany. It has a much darker past than people realize. Number two, moron. Moron was a term used to describe people with intellectual disabilities that was often used to justify forced steril izations. It was very common among eugenicists. Number three, eeny, meeny, miny, moe. I am shocked by how many people do not know that the word tiger was originally this word. It was common in both the US and the UK and it took decades for people to change it even in schools. Number four, powwow. It's not just a meeting, it's a sacred indigenous ceremony where people gather. Using the term to describe a business meeting can come across as disrespectful even if you don't mean it to be. And number five, eskimo. This was a term given by outsiders to label indigenous people and the term means eater of raw meat. Many indigenous arctic people find it offensive and outdated. Words matter and knowing the roots of these words help us to be more respectful and conscientious people. If you use any of these things, I'd encourage you not to, but obviously I'm not the language police. Okay, peace and love.
