The Earth secretly hides an eighth continent, and it's not what most people would think. Most would probably assume I'm referring to Greenland, but the continent I'm talking about is actually more than twice as large. Indeed, as early as 1995, a geologist suggested the possibility of a hidden continent beneath New Zealand, and after further inspection using satellite images, his proposal became surprisingly convincing. Under the waters of New Zealand and New Caledonia exists a submerged continent that broke away from Australia about 80 million years ago. This continent, named Zealandia, covers an area almost as large as that of neighboring Australia. However, more than 94% of this land remains submerged. But how did this underwater landmass come to be considered a continent? Well, Zealandia meets the three widely accepted criteria for defining a continent. The most important criterion is that a continent must have an elevation above sea level, which can clearly be seen on this map.
