On January 28, 1962, Relleke was stationed at the Kamativi tin mine in what was then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. He was walking with his dog when they were attacked by a huge swarm of African bees. Relleke and his dog jumped into the Gwaii River to escape the swarm. He stayed focused on keeping his dog's nose above the water while trying to escape the bees. Then the situation became even more horrific when a crocodile attacked and ate his dog while Relleke was trying to save it. Relleke eventually made it to the riverbank alive. Doctors removed and counted 2,443 bee stings from his body, which Guinness lists as the greatest number of bee stings survived by a person. He survived, but unfortunately, his dog did not.
