And right here in the heart of the Sonoran Desert lies Phoenix, the hottest city in America. Phoenix soaks up nearly 300 sunny days a year, with summer temperatures scorching to an average of over 40 degrees Celsius. The urban heat island effect doesn't make things any easier as concrete and asphalt trap the sun's heat, keeping the city warm even through the night. On top of that, the surrounding mountain ranges trap the warmer air, preventing cool air from entering. Despite the relentless heat, more than 1.6 million people still choose to call Phoenix home, which is more than double the population of neighboring cities like Tucson, Albuquerque, and even Las Vegas. Interestingly, some locals have even learned to bake cookies in their cars during peak summer days, turning the extreme heat into a fun experiment. So why do so many people live here?
